Meitei Pung yet to be patented

IMPHAL, Dec 29 : Even as the Government has taken up different initiatives to safeguard the art and culture of the State, Meitei pung which is inseparable with Manipur culture is yet to be patented.
Unlike Meitei pung, dholak, another folk percussion instrument, got the patent on January 29 this year.
Speaking to The Sangai Express in this regard, Meihoubam Seitaban who is a Guru at the Nat Sankirtan Department of Jawaharlal Nehru Manipur Dance Academy (JNMDA) said that Meitei pung is one of the ancient percussion instruments which still is used in different cultural and religious events in Manipur since the time of  Maharaj Bheigyachandra.
Saying that Meitei pung is used in various events such as weaning ceremony, marriage, mangani leihun, shradha and phiroi among others, he said that the instrument (Meitei pung) is also an integral part of Nat Sankirtan which is included in the list of Intangible Cultural Heritage of UNESCO.
There is no decline in the utilisation of Meitei pung but some changes are occasionally seen in the performing of pung cholom especially in marriage ceremonies, he said and added that preserving the art form of pung cholom and the percussion instrument need support from the people.
Senior lecturer of JNMDA Gurumayum Lokendro said that Meitei pung is an integral part of Ras Leela, a traditional Manipuri dance form.
Saying that emergence of fusion music has popularised the Meitei pung furthermore, he sought support from all  concerned to patent the music instrument.
