IMPHAL, Dec 28 : In the aftermath of the Khurai bridge collapse which claimed the life of a woman yesterday, people of the Constituency have expressed discontent with their representative CAF & PD and PHED Minister L Susindro Meitei.
At 7 am yesterday, the wooden bailey bridge linking Khurai Angom Mamang Leikai and Moirangkampu Sajeb over the Iril River collapsed and Pukhrambam Bheigyabati (65) w/o Raghu of Khurai Angom Mamang Leikai fell into the river below. She was rushed to a hospital but was declared brought dead. Her husband and a young child who were crossing the bridge with her also suffered injuries.
According to residents of Khurai Angom Leikai and Moirangkampu Sajeb, the CAF & PD Minister promised to build an RCC (Reinforced Cement Concrete) bridge in place of the wooden bailey bridge and laid the foundation stone for the same on January 7, 2022 before the 12th Manipur Legislative Assembly election was conducted.
In what appeared to be a tactic to get more votes, the Khurai AC MLA assured to build the bridge at the time but did not even repair the dilapidated bridge after winning the elections, which led to the unfortunate incident, they said.
Speaking in this connection, Soubam Anand from Moirangkampu said that prior to the collapse, they visited the residence of Minister L Susindro with an appeal to repair the bridge. As he was not home, they laid out their grievances before the MLA's father who assured them that their demand would be addressed within ten days. However, no renovation work was undertaken.
