Kuki militants renew offensive, target Meitei villages

IMPHAL, Dec 26: After a brief lull, Kuki militants celebrated Christmas by targeting several Meitei villages with bombs and bullets since Christmas eve.
Kuki militants renewed their aggression on December 24 night by targeting Meitei villages located in the periphery of Lamlai Assembly Constituency at Shanti- khongbal, Thamnapokpi, Sanasabi and Sabungkhok Khunou from Sangarang village Uyok Ching, Natum Ching and Urang Pat Maning Ching, sources said.
At around 10.30 pm on December 24, Kuki militants fired uncountable numbers of bombs and bullets toward the Meitei villages from different directions.
Security personnel deployed in the area retaliated by opening fire toward the Kuki militants and prevented the Kuki militants from advancing toward the Meitei villages.
The gun battle lasted till 2 am of December 25.
Kuki militants again attacked Shantikhongbal, Thamnapokpi, Sanasabi and Sabungkhok Khunou on Wednesday night.
Security personnel also retaliated by firing bullets toward Kuki militants and the battle lasted the whole night.
There is no report of any injury on the side of security personnel and civilians during the attack by Kuki militants, said the sources.
Another Meitei village located near Sinam Kom village under Khundrakpam Assembly Constituency too came under attack from Kuki militants early morning on Wednesday.
As the security personnel fired back, fierce fighting ensued between the two sides and the exchange of firing lasted several hours.
There is no report of any injury on the side of security personnel and civilians.
Sources said that there might be some casualties on the side of Kuki militants in the retaliatory firing by security personnel.
Kuki militants continued their attack at Thamnapokpi village this afternoon too. They fired several rounds of bullets at Thamnapokpi from Uyok Ching hill range.  
Many innocent children were playing at Thamnapokpi ground when the Kuki militants opened fire. On hearing the gun shots, the children immediately ran away and took shelter in safer areas. The Kuki militants ceased firing only after Central forces went toward Uyok Ching in their Casspir vehicles and opened fire toward the Kuki militants.
