IMPHAL, Dec 26 : Condemning the new protocol introduced by the Ministry of Home Affairs allowing cross-border movement of people residing along the Indo-Myanmar Border (IMB), the Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI) has demanded its withdrawal without delay.
According to this system, persons residing within 10 kms on either side of the IMB can enter each others' territories after obtaining passes from the Assam Rifles. The pass will have to be deposited on their return before the completion of seven days.
A press release issued by Yumkhaibam Surjitkumar Khuman, media coordinator, COCOMI reminded that the Government had suspended the Free Movement Regime as per the recommendation of the Centre to control the influx of illegal immigrants from Myanmar in the backdrop of the ongoing conflict.
Additionally, fencing along the IMB was also initiated for the same reason.
In view of such efforts, the MHA's introduction of the border pass system is akin to reinstating the Free Movement Regime, lambasted COCOMI.
Stating that the people of Manipur will never accept this move, COCOMI urged the Central Government to rescind their decision.
The COCOMI press release also accused the Centre of often changing its tune, creating confusion among the public and thus rendering the idea of democracy meaningless.
Previously, Central leaders had attributed unregulated movement of illegal immigrants from across the border as one of the reasons for the Manipur violence and subsequently arrived at the decision to suspend FMR and initiate border fencing along the Indo-Myanmar border, stated COCOMI.
Now, after the crisis has festered for almost two years, the Centre has depicted the unrest as a "political conflict" between the two communities and allowed the limited entry of Nationals of both countries into the others' territory.
COCOMI asserted that this is clear evidence of the Central Government waging a proxy war against Manipur.
It further questioned if protection of India's National interest excludes border areas inhabited by small communities like Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir and Punjab.
Lastly, COCOMI reiterated the public demands and called for military crackdown on Kuki militants, withdrawal of AFSPA from six police station areas and implementation of NRC in Manipur.
