Imposters haunting Class X exams Of question setters and others

What is there to be gained from being named a question setter of the Class X examinations conducted by the Board of Secondary Education, Manipur ? If one is truly an educationist, an individual with a passion for imparting knowledge to the youngsters and in the process is given the opportunity to set the question papers which will test the students, then one may take pride the in term ‘job satisfaction.’ But given the manner in which professions, repeat almost all professions, have been mone-tised, the fact that a not so gentle gentleman has been identified and pulled up for impersonating a question setter for the coming HSLC examination should jolt the people awake to the rot that may come along with the very conduct of the matric examination. This is a serious matter and one hopes the Government has taken note of the serious charges levelled by the student body and take things to its logical conclusion. What is there to be gained by falsely selling oneself as a question setter for the matric examination ? It is not something which would propel anyone into the league of the VIPs, not something which would guarantee the front bench in any Government function, and hence the question why anyone would sell oneself as a question setter ? Take two and two together and juxtapose it against the fact that the conman also identified himself as the Principal of an academy, most probably a coaching institute, and a pattern will emerge. And here is a case that has the ingredients to besmirch all other coaching institutes in the State and this is precisely the reason why the Government should take the allegations raised by the student body with all the seriousness it deserves. Or is it going to be a case of the Government giving two hoots about the allegations raised ? It is also a matter of serious concern that the accused was in the know of the finer details of the preparation for the conduct of the HSLC examination, even going to the extent of admitting that he came to know that setting the question papers for the 10th examination will start from November 13-14. Things are not right and this should disturb everyone, especially parents and guardians who take a keen interest in the academic performance of their children and wards. But what steps can be taken up by the concerned parents and elders of the family ? Such frauds will not appear if everyone concerned say no to whatever is being offered clandestinely, all for a price. Again it is important for parents and guardians to start questioning how their children are being prepared for the Class X and Class XII examinations by the school or coaching institute concerned. All these will go a long way in really making education for the children meaningful.
The rot within. And it has been going on for too long. And it should not be forgotten that frauds and conmen will appear when the atmosphere is conducive for such elements to appear. There was a time when the Class X and Class XII examinations were some sort of a jamboree at every examination centre, with helpers or runners, outnumbering the number of candidates at any examination centre. It was for this very reason why a proscribed outfit took up the task of trying to cleanse the examination and cracked down hard on all concerned with examination invigilators being penalised under a special operation that came with a name. The fallout of such a drive became evident when the results of the Class X examination was announced the year the proscribed outfit launched the operation with the pass percentage dipping to an abysmal low, a show that had not been seen in decades. The Sangai Express still remembers the screaming headline that was used to announce the results ‘Mission Schools shine amid HSLC ruins’. Those who are in the media will remember how the examination centres were effectively sanitised after the drive launched by the proscribed outfit but it is unfortunate to note that the dirt and grime that characterised the examination centres earlier seems to have morphed into something more sophisticated and unpredictable now. This is where the role of parents and guardians becomes important to identify and keep a safe distance from any institute which does not seem to be above board.
