Student bodies question Govt’s failure to appoint regular VC Only one regular VC since 2018

IMPHAL, Dec 21: Several student organisations have questioned the State Government’s failure to appoint a regular Vice Chancellor of Dhanamanjuri University.
Speaking to media persons on behalf of the six student bodies which included DESAM, MSF, KSA, SUK and AIMS at the Kwakeithel office of DESAM today, DESAM president Mayengbam Somorjit Meetei said that the State Government has been victimising students and jeopardising their careers by not appointing a regular VC of DMU for such a long time.
Former DMU Registrar Dr Nivedita Lairenlakpam issued an order July 10 this year with regard to appointment of a regular VC.
Despite the order, no regular VC has been appointed till date, Somorjit decried.
He questioned if there is no mechanism for appointment of DMU VC and why the Government has been taking so long to appoint a regular VC.
He further asked if the Government is unable to appoint a regular VC for such a long time due to nomination or recommendation of different  candidates by people in positions of power. The Manipur Assembly passed the Dhana- manjuri University Act in 2017 and the university was set up the following year. People expected that DMU would contribute immensely to the human resource development in the State, Somorjit said.
But now people are losing their expectations, he said.
From 2018 to 2024, there has been only one regular VC. Except for the tenure of the regular VC, bureaucrat officers have been acting as VCs of  DMU all these years, he pointed out.
Before DMU was set up, its constituent colleges such as DM College of Science, DM College of Arts, DM College of Commerce, GP Women’s College etc were known as colleges of excellence not only in Manipur but across the North East region, he said.
After these colleges were brought under DMU, all these colleges have lost their academic excellence, So-morjit said.
Students as well as guardians have lost their faith in DMU. After the retirement of Prof N Rajmuhon who served as the first VC of DMU, no regular VC has been appointed till date, he said.
Demanding immediate appointment of a regular VC for DMU, Somorjit said that the six student bodies will be compelled to launch different modes of agitation  if the State Government continues with its wrong policies.
