IMPHAL, Nov 6 : The flop foreign policy of the Centre and the BJP has tormented the people of Manipur and the rest of North East India, said chief spokesperson of Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee Hareshwar Goswami.
Speaking to the media at Congress Bhavan today, Hareshwar Goswami said that the recent controversial statement given by Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma in the United States challenges the unity and integrity of India and asserted that this is unacceptable to the Congress party.
Hareshwar also said that the Congress party condemns the statement of the Mizoram Chief Minister in the strongest terms.
Lalduhoma speaking about the creation of a separate land for Chin-Kuki-Zo people during a public event in the United States on September 4 was unfortunate, he added.
The Indian Government should not brush aside the issue as Lalduhoma is a Chief Minister of an Indian State, the Congress leader added.
Continuing that people came to know about the explosive remark only recently, Hareshwar said that the speech of Lalduhoma was published by DIPR of Mizoram.
The publication issued by the DIPR of Mizoram is proof that Lalduhoma indeed spoke about establishing a separate Nation for Chin Kuki Zo people living in three countries, he said.
A responsible leader will never make such a sensitive statement, Hareshwar said referring to the speech of the Mizoram Chief Minister.
Further stating the neighbouring States interfering in the affairs of Manipur is nothing new, the MPCC spokesman recalled the statement given by Mizo National Front (MNF) leader Laldenga on integrating Churachandpur with Greater Mizoram in 1965.
He further said that the demand to integrate Churachandpur with Greater Mizoram was also raised during the signing of the Mizo Accord in 1986. The demand to disintegrate Manipur was flatly rejected by then Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, he added.
Further stating that the World Kuki-Zo Intellectual Council had also written to the Secretary of the United Nations on June 29, 2023 to carve out a separate State for Chin Kuki Zo from India, Bangladesh and Myanmar, he asked why the Centre is still silent when certain elements are openly demanding disintegration of India.
The foreign policy of the Centre and the BJP has failed miserably, Hareshwar added.
About the crisis in Manipur, the Congress leader said that different Chin Kuki Zo groups have been raising different demands - from Separate Administration and Union Territory to Territorial Council and Sixth Schedule.
Former Governor Anusuiya Uikey and Union Home Minister Amit Shah had spoken about the involvement of foreign hands in instigating the unrest in the State, the Congress leader recalled and asked how the double engine BJP Government didn't know about the issue in advance.
Chief Minister N Biren Singh, on the other hand, gave random statements on the origin of the Manipur crisis as he would say it was the failure on the part of the State Government in implementing law and order at one moment and point finger at illegal immigrants the next moment.
Other Congress leaders also attended the press briefing.
