IMPHAL, Nov 26 : The Chief Executive Member of the Karbi Autonomous Council, Tuliram Ronghang, has made a strong appeal to remove illegal Kuki settlements from Karbi Anglong in Assam.
Nearly 1000 individuals of the Kuki community have entered Karbi Anglong. Around 500 families have encroached on the Karbi hills, said the Chief Executive Member as per a report of India TodayNE.
Ronghang made the statement at a land patta distribution function held at Howraghat.
Raising concern over the increasing influx of Kukis, Ronghang asserted that "the illegal settlements must be vacated immediately."
Significantly, this is not the first time this issue has been raised urging the Assam Government and the authorities concerned to remove illegal Kuki settlements from the district.
Last month, the Karbi Lammet Amei--an apex Karbi literature society had urged the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council to evict illegal Kuki settlements.
In a memorandum addressed to Dr Tuliram Ronghang, the Chief Executive Member of the Autonomous Council, the Karbi Literature Society had asserted that Kukis from Manipur were occupying land belonging to the Karbi people.
It had asserted that the Kukis who have encroached on the land belonging to the Karbi people must be driven out and they must not be given land.
The Karbi Lammet Amei pointed out that the Kukis were occupying Singhason and Khonbamon hills and adjoining areas which fall under Singhason and Borjan MAC Constituencies.
"...our precious land that our forefathers left us in our custody are now in their [Kukis] hands," the society had said in its memorandum.
It had urged the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) and the Government of Assam to arrange makeshift shelters or camps in a designated place to accommodate the displaced people from Manipur on humanitarian ground under strict supervision of the State.
The Karbi Lammet Amei had appealed to the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council and the Assam Government to identify the influx/displaced people and send them back when situation normalises in Manipur.
