IMPHAL, Nov 23: Even as the crack within the BJP has become visibly widened, the Government has not yet taken any action against MLAs who stayed away from a meeting of the ruling parties recently.
The meeting of NDA MLAs and Ministers was held on November 18 at the Chief Minister's Secretariat.
11 MLAs and Ministers excluding 10 Kuki MLAs didn't attend the meeting, presided over by the Chief Minister.
Notably, a notice was issued earlier by Ningthoujam Geoffrey, Secretary to Chief Minister informing all ruling MLAs and Ministers to attend the meeting without fail.
The 11 MLAs include 9 from BJP---Y Khemchand (Singjamei), L Rameshwor Meetei (Keirao), Kh Joy-kisan (Thangmeiband), Kh Raghumani (Uripok), T Ro-bindro (Thanga), Th Radhe- shyam (Heirok), Paonam Brojen (Wangjing-Tentha), Dr Yumnam Radheshyam (Hiyanglam), and Md Ashab Uddin (Jiribam).
The other two who didn't attend the meeting include Independent MLA Nishikant Singh Sapam (Keisham-thong) and NPP MLA Sheikh Noorul Hassan (Kshetrigao).
While the MLAs didn't give any reason for their absence from the meeting, they have so far not received any show cause notice.
Significantly, the mass absence of the ruling MLAs has signalled a larger and wider rift between the BJP MLAs.
Rural Development and Panchayati Raj Minister Y Khemchand has become critical of the Chief Minister in public.
The crack within the BJP has become clearer after the recent spate of violence in Jiribam which saw six of a family including women and children murdered after they were abducted by Kuki militants on November 11.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other Central BJP leaders have not yet condemned the killings, and this is believed to have added to the widening rift.
The killing of the six hostages by Kuki militants, and the silence of the Centre, had sparked violent protests that saw mobs burning down houses of several elected Members.
Several civil organisations and women bodies had then urged the elected Members to make their stand known and take swift action against the Kuki militants or resign as MLAs.
This forced the Government to convene a meeting, which the 11 MLAs didn't attend.
