‘Oust Chief Minister N Biren Singh’ call is now led by BJP’s ally National People's Party (NPP). The party which had decided to withdraw support from the BJP led Government stated it will consider supporting the Government once Biren Singh is replaced. NPP has clarified that it has withdrawn support from the Biren Singh led Government not NDA.
On Sunday NPP decided to withdraw its support to the Biren Singh led Government in the State of Manipur, with immediate effect. Conrad K Sangma, National president of NPP and Chief Minister of Meghalaya sent a letter to BJP National president JP Nadda.
Sangma told media persons on Monday, “We were hopeful that the situation would improve in Manipur and we were supporting the Government with a hope toward normalcy. In the last one-week the situation has gone bad. We had been discussing the situation with Central BJP leaders.”
He added, “We have suggested that trust needs to be built, it’s because of trust deficit that the overall efforts to bring peace are not reaching a logical conclusion. We strongly felt that there is no confidence in our party in the current leadership of Biren Singh ji. The violence is not a solution, but sentiments are high. We urge the Centre to take serious note of what is happening in Manipur now. As the second largest party of Manipur we will cooperate to bring peace."
Sangma said, “We have withdrawn our support to the Biren Singh-led Government, so it is very specific to him, the individual. We have withdrawn the support from Biren Singh led Government not NDA. If there is a leadership change and positive impact of that change, we might think of supporting again”. He said that the incidents of attacks targeted at MLAs saying this is not the way to find a solution but added that the party understands the sentiments of people in Manipur are very high.
The NPP in Manipur was battling a rift as seven MLAs were divided over continuing support to the Biren led Government.
BJP on its own has the majority. BJP is supporting the NPP led Government in Meghalaya.
