IMPHAL, Nov 1: The Democratic Students Alliance of Manipur (DESAM) has alleged that Diabetes Hospital and Research Centre located near JNIMS main gate, Porompat was being run by a self-proclaimed doctor without necessary registration with the authority concerned.
Speaking to media persons at their Kwakeithel office today, DESAM president Mayengbam Somorjit Meetei said that they carried out an independent investigation and it was found that the particular hospital was being run without the necessary registration.
He also dismissed the statements made to media on October 30 by Diabetes Hospital and Research Centre’s consultant doctor and managing director Moirang-them Dhanabir Singh as fabricated and baseless.
Somorjit pointed out that the Health Department is the supervising authority of all hospitals, clinics, laboratories and nursing institutes opened in Manipur.
All hospitals, clinics, laboratories and nursing institutes were opened after obtaining certificates from the Health Directorate.
But the certificate produced by the Diabetes Hospital and Research Centre was given by some society, not the Health Directorate, he said.
By running the hospital on the strength of a registration certificate issued by some society, the managing director and the consultant doctor of the hospital has been deceiving the public, he continued.
M Dhanabir earlier told media that the hospital is being run under AYUSH and it has nothing to do with the Health Directorate, according to Somorjit.
Investigation by DESAM revealed that there is an AYUSH Directorate in the State but it has not yet concrete rules or criteria for setting AYUSH hospitals in the State, he said.
Diabetes Hospital and Research Centre, Porompat was set up on July 30, 2023. However, it could not be ascertained yet whether its managing director M Dhanabir is a Naturopathy doctor or Homeopathy doctor.
Somorjit then questioned the Health Directorate whether anybody can open a hospital or clinic without its permission or certification.
If it is permissible, the Health Directorate ought to come out with a clarification and if it is not permissible, the directorate must take up a suo moto case against Diabetes Hospital and Research Centre, he said.
He also appealed to M Dhanabir to bring out his medical certificate with the name of the institute from where he graduated within two days if he is a real doctor.
