IMPHAL, Nov 1 : Sound pollution reached as high as 70.9 decibels (dB) on Diwali night in Imphal today against the standard limit of 55 dB amid a ban on fireworks and crackers.
The noise level was monitored near Raj Bhavan and MG Avenue by the staff of Manipur Pollution Control Board (MPCB).
RK Santosh, a  staff of MPCB, said that the noise level touched as high as 70.9 dB till 7 pm at the monitoring sites.
The noise reduced to 67.4 dB after 8 pm, he added.
Saying that the rate of bursting fireworks and crackers on Diwali night has reduced compared to previous years, he added that the noise level, however, still exceeds the standard limit.
He said that noise from congested traffic may also have contributed to the sound pollution.
It may be mentioned that MPCB had appealed to all the people to not sell and use fireworks and crackers.
Notably, there is a ban on fireworks and crackers in different districts too.
