IMPHAL, Nov 12 : Altogether 13 organisations have called a 24 hour shutdown throughout the State with a demand to rescue the Meitei civilians abducted by Kuki militants and to arrest those involved in killing Sofia, a farmer, at Wathalambi in Bishnupur.
The shutdown which started from 6 pm today is called by ACOAM-Lup, IPSA, PANDM, KSA, IPAK, Loyalup, ERDO, Kangla Mei, CLK, KIL, AKSIL, MIKL and SWA.
Speaking to the media at IPSA office at Keishampat today, spokesperson of the coalition Nahakpam Shanta said that Sofia was killed while she was working in a field right under the nose of Central forces at Wathalambi under Phougakchao Ikhai police station on November 9.
Saying that the Government hasn't taken up any action to arrest the killers, he said that Kuki militants have been carrying out a fresh wave of violent campaign against the people in foothill areas since the last few days.
He also said that the Central forces not taking up action to rescue the people including
children who were abducted by Kuki militants yesterday is unacceptable.
Saying that they are hopeful the Central forces will rescue the abducted individuals using their intelligence, he demanded that the abducted people be rescued within 24 hours.
It is now clear that Kuki militant groups have political backing, he said and added that Kuki militants engaging in an act of terrorism despite holding a talk with the Government is questionable.
Shanta also said that elected representatives must make their stand clear on the unfolding situation within 24 hours.
It was only recently that Kuki, Naga and Meetei MLAs held a talk with the Ministry of Home Affairs to work out a solution to the prolonged crisis in Manipur, he said and added that the Kuki militants, however, have been attacking the innocent Meeteis whenever they want.
He further said that a particular organisation imposing bandh along Imphal-Ukhrul road over the attack at farmers at Shanti Khongbal where one Tangkhul person was injured is unfortunate.
Saying that movement of vehicles along National Highways has reduced considerably due to the unrest, he said that the Government should take responsibility for the inflation in Manipur.
The suffering of people may be reduced to some extent if there is free flow of supply along the highways.
