5th Hangeul Day opens

IMPHAL, Oct 9: The fifth Hangeul Day which would be celebrated for five days was opened today in Manipur University campus.
The event is being organised by the Department of Foreign Languages, Manipur University with the  support of Academy of Korean Studies.
The inaugural function held at the Court Hall was graced by MC Vice Chancellor Prof N Lokendra, Embassy of Republic of Korea in India, Deputy Chief of Mission Sang Woo Lim (virtually), Korea International cooperation Agency (KOICA) India Office Director Woochan Chang, MU Department of Foreign Languages Programme Director Prof Hyunkyung Lee, Assam Rifles CO Col Sandeep Mishra and MU School of Humanities Dean and Foreign Languages HoD Prof S Imoba and they gave congratulatory remarks.  
Speaking at the occasion, Prof N Lokendra said that language not only serves as the backbone of one’s culture, tradition and history but also keeps one in touch with the legacy of his/her ancestors.
Today’s event is in commemoration of the day the Korean alphabet, Hangeul was invented, he said.
Promoting and developing a language is a matter of paramount importance for language serves as a bridge to one’s history and culture apart from shaping the identity of a Nation or community, the VC said.
Several courses for learning Korean language are opened in MU with the help of the Korean Government and the university has been working to add a PhD course at the earliest, he said.
MU Department of Foreign Languages Programme Director Prof Hyunkyung Lee said that the Korean alphabet known as Hangeul was invented by King Sejong in 1446.
Korean Government declared October 9 as a public holiday and Hangeul Day is observed on this day every year.
Hangeul Day has been observed every year in MU too since 2018, she said. A one-year certificate course on Korean language in MU in 2012. Two-year PG Diploma Course was added in 2018. BA Honours course on Korean language was opened in 2020 before a five-year integrated course was introduced in MU in 2021, Prof Hyunkyung Lee  said.
Masters Programme on Korean language was introduced last year and some students have already secured employment at the Korean Embassy, Shinhan Bank and firms like EG.
Some students are getting scholarships, she said.
CUET held in 2022 for studying Korean language in MU was participated by around 4500 students.
She expressed hope that Korean language programmes will go on successfully at MU in conjunction with the observation of Hangeul Day.
The inaugural session was followed by seminar, quiz competition about Korea and Korean speech competition.
There will be a Korean food festival, weaving of Korean costumes and Korean traditional games in the MU Centenary Hall on Thursday. The event will also feature Korean cultural programmes, Korean fan dance, K-pop, dance and music, Manipuri dance and Taekwondo etc in the following days.
