AR seizes brown sugar, areca nuts

Imphal, Oct 7: Assam Rifles has foiled multiple smuggling attempts in a series of operations conducted on October 6.
IGAR (South) in a statement said that three vehicles carrying 11,000 kgs of Areca Nuts worth Rs 91.63 lakh, concealed under grocery were confiscated at at Thamnapokpi and 6 individuals from Sora, Thoubal District were apprehended.
In another operation at New Songyang village, Moltuk on the same day, 8800 kgs of Areca Nuts valued at Rs 76 lakh were recovered from a hidden farm hut.
Simultaneously, during an area domination patrol at Wamku Junction, 10 soap cases of  brown sugar worth Rs 28 lakh concealed in the bushes were recovered.
The recovered items were handed over to the relevant authorities for further investigation.
Notably, the Assam Rifles had foiled another cross-border smuggling attempt along the Indo-Myanmar border at Moreh in  Tengnoupal district on Saturday.
The Assam Rifles recovered 115 cases of foreign liquor from a crowded market in Moreh.
The contraband item was valued at approximately Rs four lakh in the international market. The seized liquor was handed over to the customs officials in Moreh.
