MU Inter College Badminton Tournament Thambal Marik College, Naorem Birahari College, Pole Star College progress into men's quarters

IMPHAL, Oct 7 : Thambal Marik College, Oinam; Naorem Birahari College, Khundrakpam and Pole Star College, Wabagai all secured comprehensive 3-0 first round victories to progress into men's quarter-finals of the Chongtham ongbi Rajkumari Tamphasana Memorial Manipur University Inter College Badminton (M&W) Tournament 2024-25.
The tournament organised in the knock-out format is hosted by Naorem Birahari College, Khundrakpam under the aegis of the Manipur University sports Committee, Canchipur at its indoor hall and features 12 men's teams and 4 women's teams representing various colleges and institutes.
In the first match of the men's tournament, Thambal Marik College knocked out Imphal College by 3-0 margin riding on singles wins registered by Shasen Sagolshem and Tongbram Bonson and a doubles victory by the pair of Bronson and Pritamkumar Oinam.
In the opening singles match, Shasen Sagolshem edged past RK Hemchand of Imphal College 21-17, 19-21, 21-17 while Tongbram Bonson thumped Nameirakpam Malemnganba of the Imphal College 21-16, 21-4 to hand his college a 2-0 lead.
Tongbram Bonson and Pritamkumar Oinam then eased to a 21-14, 21-19 against RK Hemchand and Thokchom Bishman to complete the 3-0 thumping of Imphal College.
Thambal Marik College will play Mangolnganbi College, who got a first round bye, in the quarterfinal encounter.
Meanwhile in the second match, the hosts pulled off a similar win against Standard College, Kongba.
Salam Stearly Singh opened the lead with a 21-6, 21-3 win over Standard College's Mushahar Ali before Thoudam Dison made it 2-0 with an overwhelming 21-3, 21-6 win over Keisham Nepolean.
Salam Stearly and Thoudam Dison then combined well to  prevail 21-11, 21-6 against Mushahar Ali and A Denish and booked the quarter final berth.
Naorem Birahari College will now face Manipur University, who got a first round bye, in the quarterfinal match.
In the third match, Pole Star College thumped Liberal College, Luwangsangbam 3-0.
Konjengbam Ngamba gave Pole Star College the lead by registering an easy 21-11, 21-7 win over Aheibam Kelvin of Liberal College before Chingangbam Ritesh doubled the lead with another easy 21-5, 21-7 win over Sarangthem Joychandra.
Chingangbam Ritesh and Chirom Vickson then completed the 3-0 beating by defeating the pair of S Joychandra and Thoi Okram 21-5, 21-8 in the ensuing doubles match.
