Rift widens within NPP

IMPHAL, Oct 7: Even as the rift between NPP State legislators and the party’s State executive members has been widening, a joint meeting of the legislators and the executive members has been convened on October 9.
NPP National president Conrad Sangma convened a meeting of the party’s National executive committee on October 5 at New Delhi to take a concrete decision on whether NPP should keep on supporting the BJP Government in Manipur or should withdraw support but the meeting was later deferred indefinitely.
Meanwhile, NPP Manipur secretary Kh Shyam issued a notification on October 5 for a meeting of the State executive committee at the party’s head office at Uripok Naoremthong at 9.30 am on October 9.
Apart from delivering the notification to all the NPP MLAs and State executive committee members, they have been asked to attend the meeting without fail, sources said.
The notification mentioned that the meeting has been convened with due approval of NPP Manipur president MLA N Kayisii.
The meeting scheduled on October 9 may take a concrete decision whether NPP should keep on supporting the BJP Government or the party should withdraw its support, said the sources.
The meeting notification has been already sent to NPP National president Conrad Sangma, NPP Manipur in-charge Prestone Tynsong, NPP National vice-president Yumnam Joykumar, NPP Manipur president N Kayisii, NPP National general secretary James K Sangma, NPP MLAs of Manipur and NPP Manipur State executive members.
After BJP, NPP is the second largest party with seven MLAs and they are supporting the BJP Government led by N Biren.
Earlier, NPP National vice-president Y Joykumar announced that NPP will pull out of the BJP Government if the Government cannot bring a solution to the Manipur crisis by October 3.
On account of the Government’s failure to bring a solution to the protracted crisis, a few NPP MLAs including the State president and the State executive members wish to pull out of the Government while the remaining MLAs are in favour of continuing the party’s support to the BJP Government.
