IMPHAL, Oct 6: Locals of Lamphel Khunou Meitei Leikai staged a sit-in protest denouncing the attempt to evict them from the area to build a mental hospital.
The people of Lamphel Khunou Meitei Leikai have settled here for over 40 years. They can't be uprooted overnight and displaced to build a mental hospital, said the protesters, who said they may take extreme steps if the authorities go ahead with the eviction plan.
If the people are forcefully evicted, then "we would self immolate", said the protesters.
Speaking to reporters, one of the locals said they have been settled in the locality for over 40 years.
There is also a case pending before the Court pertaining to the land. When the case is pending before the Court, the Government should not serve eviction notice and try to forcibly evict and displace the people, he said.
There are many large unoccupied spaces near the village where the mental hospital can be built. People have been living here for decades.
The Government should not just bulldoze the houses and render the people homeless. It should consider the available empty spaces, large enough to house the hospital, he added.
He reiterated that the people are ready to take extreme steps if the Government remains defiant and is hellbent on forcefully making them homeless folks overnight.
