IMPHAL, Oct 5 : No land must be given to Kukis who came from Manipur, the Karbi Lammet Amei has said to the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council.
An apex Karbi literature society, the Karbi Lammet Amei has asserted that the Kukis from Manipur are now occupying land belonging to the Karbi people.
This came to light after the Karbi Lammet Amei submitted a memorandum to Dr Tuliram Ronghang, Chief Executive Member of the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council, Diphu.
In the memorandum dated October 4, the Karbi Lammet Amei said that clashes between Meiteis and Kukis in Manipur have led to exodus of members of Kuki community into Karbi Anglong district.
It said the Kukis are occupying Singhason and Khonbamon hills and adjoining areas which fall under Singhason and Borjan MAC Constituencies, KAAC.
"...our precious land that our forefathers left us in our custody are now in their [Kukis] hands," read the memorandum.
The Karbi Lammet Amei made several demands and asserted that the Kukis who came from Manipur must not be given land.
The Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) and the Government of Assam may arrange makeshift shelters or camps in a designated place and under state strict supervision to accommodate the displaced victims from Manipur on humanitarian ground, it said.
The district and the State must identify the influx/displaced people and send them back when situation normalises in Manipur, said the Karbi Lammet Amei to the KAAC.
