IMPHAL, Oct 5: The Manipur Drivers’ Association (MDA) has appealed to the State Government to get the sunken portion of Imphal-Dimapur highway at Jabra near Kohima fully restored in consultation with the Government of Nagaland.
Speaking to media persons at its Kwakeithel office today, MDA general secretary Kshetrimayum Sanjoy said that transportation of essential and other goods to Imphal has been encountering several difficulties on account of frequent landslides and sinking of road along both NH-2 (Imphal-Dimapur highway) and NH-37 (Imphal-Jiribam highway).
Following the sinking of the road at Jabra near Kohima, loaded trucks cannot move across the particular section.
At the initiative of the North East Federation of Trade Union, Manipur Drivers’ Association, Kohima Drivers’ Union, Dimapur District Drivers’ Union, Senapati Truck Drivers’ Union, Senapati District Truck Owners’ Association and Khatkhati Drivers’ Union contributed money and machinery, and repaired the sunken portion on September 18, Sanjoy said.
With money contributed by these unions and associations and machinery provided by the Nagaland PWD,  the same section was repaired again on October 4, he said.
He then appealed to the State Government to pay special attention to both NH-2 and NH-37 and ensure that they are developed as all-weather, standard highways.
Taking advantage of frequent disruption on transportation of goods from outside the State, traders have hiked prices of essential commodities. This is undesirable, he said.
He also appealed to the Government to check the price hike.
