IMPHAL, Oct 4: The Manipur State Council, Communist Party of India (MSC-CPI) has expressed dissatisfaction with the Centre not recognising Manipuri as a classical language.
In a statement issued today, the MSC-CPI said the Manipuri language is thousands of years old. It has scripts and is rich in literature. It has all the essence of a classical language, said MSC-CPI.
Manipuri is the lingua franca, spoken across the length and breadth of Manipur and beyond. Lakhs of Manipuris living in Assam and other places and even in neighbouring countries of Bangladesh and Myanmar speak the language.
Not recognising such a rich language as a classical language is unfortunate, said the MSC-CPI, urging the Government to give the due recognition to the language.
Notably, there are a total of 11 classical languages including five added by the Centre yesterday.
The 11 classical languages are Tamil, Sanskrit, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Odia, Assamese, Bengali, Marathi, Pali and Prakrit.
Assamese, Bengali, Marathi, Pali and Prakrit are new additions to the list.
