MOIRANG, Oct 28: In one of their drives to protect wildlife, a team of Forest staff rescued two birds and seized 42 nets used in catching birds from around Keibul Lamjao National Park this morning.
The drive carried out under the supervision of Deputy Conservator of Forest (Park and Sanctuary) Vikram Node and Range Officer W Khelchandra covered different places around Keibul Lamjao National Park including Chingmei, Keirenphabi and Thangalawai.
Many nets were found spread around fish farms to catch birds during the drive.
Even though two birds trapped in the nets were rescued alive by the Forest staff, some other birds trapped in similar fashion were found dead.
While one of the rescued birds was released inside Keibul Lamjao National Park, it was said that the other bird would be handed over to the Wildlife Institute of India as it was quite weak.
The two birds rescued alive were Urok Lamprai ad Chongkhu. The birds found dead or killed included Chongkhu, Lam Khunu, Maku, Hongai, Charoi, Sembang and Sekpi.
Keibul Lamjao National Park Beat Officer S Sanahanba who led the drive said that similar drives were carried earlier too but no such large number of nets could be seized. But a large number of nets with many birds trapped inside were seized today and many of the birds were found already dead, he said.
Pointing out that wild animals and birds take key roles in maintaining ecological balance, Sanahanba appealed to all the people to stop hunting/killing wildlife.
He said that anyone apprehended for trapping birds or laying nets to trap birds would be fined Rs 25,000 and imprisoned for three to six months as per law.
