IMPHAL, Oct 2: Referring to the violent crisis besieging Manipur for the past 17 months, CLP leader and former Chief Minister Okram Ibobi has asserted that violence will not bring any kind of solution.
The 155th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi and the 120th birth anniversary of Lal Bahadur Shastri were observed together at Congress Bhavan here under the aegis of Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC).
Led by CLP leader Okram Ibobi, MPCC president K Meghachandra and CWC Member Gaikhangam, the gathering offered floral tributes to the statue of Mahatma Gandhi and photograph of Lal Bahadur Shastri.
Speaking at the occasion, Ibobi said that the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, also known as the father of the Nation, is now celebrated as International Day of Non-Violence.
He said that the struggles and contributions of Mahatma Gandhi in liberating India from British colonial rule were quite immense and momentous.
He then appealed to all the people to follow the footsteps of Mahatma Gandhi and work collectively to restore peace and development in Manipur.
Recalling Mahatma Gandhi’s message that cleanliness is next to godliness, Ibobi hailed Mahatma Gandhi’s perseverance and dedication to truth.
Under the leadership of Mahatma Gandhi, the people of India fought hard to liberate India from the British colonial yoke through sustained non-violent struggles. Now people across the world are appreciating Mahatma Gandhi’s principle of non-violence, he said.
If the different communities of Manipur must live together in harmony, all acts of violence must be put to an end, the former Chief Minister said.
Reiterating that violence will not bring any kind of solution, Ibobi quoted the popular saying that there is no place for violence in a democracy.
Since the beginning of the violent crisis, the Congress party has been asking the Central Government to protect lives and properties of citizens and also to stop the fight between Meiteis and Kukis, he said.
Lal Bahadur Shastri who served as the second Prime Minister of India was another great freedom fighter who took pivotal roles in liberating India from British colonial rule, Ibobi added.
