Fresh violence erupts at Jiri, Kuki militants attack police station

IMPHAL, Oct 19 : Fresh violence erupted in the border district of Jiribam as Kuki militants attacked Borobekra police station and nearby Meitei villages early morning today.
Notably, the attack came days after the Centre initiated  a peace talk between Meitei, Kuki-Zo-Hmar and Naga legislators to restore peace in the strife-torn State.
Apart from firing bombs and rounds of bullets towards Borobekra police station, the Kuki militants set ablaze two houses at Jakuradhor Part II and dismantled another house using a bomb at Durgapur.
All the ill-fated houses belonged to Meitei families.
According to well placed sources, the Kuki militants started the attack at around 5 am using sophisticated weapons targeting the Central and State security per- sonnel deployed at Boro- bekra police station and Meetei civilians living in the adjoining areas from nearby Kuki villages.
Security personnel also retaliated by firing towards the Kuki militants who were advancing toward the police station by firing indiscriminately.
The gunfight continued till 7 am but there was no report of injury on the side of the security personnel.
It, however, is suspected that there might be some casualties on the side of Kuki militants.
It is reported that the Kuki militants fired more than five bombs toward the security personnel
Some items kept inside the police station and a fabricated house lodging CRPF personnel were damaged in the attack.
An additional team of Jiribam police and Central armed police personnel rushed to the site following the attack to bring the situation under control.
The sources continued that some Kuki militants sneaked into Meetei villages in the nearby area during the attack and destroyed three houses.
Of the three  houses, two were torched while the other was dismantled using a bomb.
The houses which were burnt down belonged to Heisnam  Premchand (48) and Oinam Tombabu (65), both from  Jakuradhor Part II.
The house which was dismantled, on the other hand, belongs to Oinam Bungo-tombi (34) of Durgapur
Villagers of the two Meitei villages have been evacuated to safer areas.
Security personnel have taken up strict security measures to prevent further attacks.
