IMPHAL, Oct 18 : Wangtangkhaibou Pamai, a 33-year-old resident of Nallong in Kuilong area of Tamei, under Tamenglong, was once again, out of health issue, compelled to be transported on a makeshift bamboo stretcher by local villagers to Peren in Nagaland today.
This situation is not uncommon for the inhabitants of Nallong and surrounding areas, where numerous untold tragedies have occurred in recent years. Notably, on August 15, 2023, while the Nation celebrated Independence Day, six critically ill patients were similarly carried on bamboo stretchers over long distances in urgent attempts to reach medical facilities, said a statement issued by Nallong Youth Club.
The region lacks essential medical services, motorable roads, electricity, and mobile or internet connectivity. There is no health center in the area, with the nearest facilities located in Tamei and Peren in Nagaland, it added.
The Club also said that absence of proper healthcare infrastructure has resulted in the loss of many lives and poses a continuous threat to the well-being of the villagers, attributed to the negligence of the leaders and the Government of Manipur.
Saying that that the fundamental right to life and Constitutional health rights of the villagers are being consistently denied, the Club said that sadly, no vehicle has come to the place since the month of May till date due to the terrible road condition.
Despite repeated appeals to relevant authorities and the Government of Manipur, these pleas have gone unacknowledged. The villagers have received no support or solidarity from local leaders, MLAs, or the Health Minister. The residents of Nallong and Kuilong area have been systematically deprived of essential services, rights, and basic needs, enduring significant hardship for decades, it further said.
Seeking the attention and intervention of the Directorate of Health Services, local MLAs, and the Health Minister to address the dire conditions the community is facing, the Club said that the authorities would be held accountable for any health crises or fatalities resulting from this negligence.
