First sitting of the 1st Assembly held in 1948 widely observedAssembly recalls day

IMPHAL, Oct 18 : A commemoration programme of  the first Assembly sitting of Manipur convened on October 18, 1948 was held at the  Banquet Hall of Manipur State Assembly today along with the 6th foundation day of Manipur Legislative Assembly Museum & Archives.
Speaking as the chief guest of the function, Speaker of the Manipur Legislative Assembly Thok- chom Satyabrata said that he was delighted to attend the commemorative programme of the first Assembly sitting of Manipur which was convened 75 years back.
Saying that the younger generations need to understand the motive behind observing the commemorative programme, he explained that every Manipuri must be proud of the extraordinary history spanning thousands of years.
He also appealed to all concerned to share knowledge to make the Archives & Museum of the Manipur Legislative Assembly more efficient in preserving and passing down the history of Manipur.
The Speaker further appealed to one and all to cooperate and work together to take Manipur to greater heights instead of simply saying Manipur is a land of jewels.
Mayang Imphal AC MLA Kongkham Robindro who is also the Chairman of MANIDCO was the guest of honour  of the programme.
Robindro said that there is confusion on the history of  Manipur as the historical account of the State wasn't recorded properly.
Saying that preserving history is important for many reasons, the MLA added that the confusion on Manipur history which prevails today wouldn't have emerged had the  history been recorded properly.
Kumbi AC MLA S Premchandra, Manipur Legislative Assembly Secretary Karam Meghajit and Additional Secretary Rohit Sapam also attended the programme among others.
A lecture series was held in the evening session of the  programme on the topics "Seven Year Devastation", "A Brief Account of Administrative History of Manipur", "Formation of Meetei/Meitei" and "Statehood Movement of  Manipur" by different  intellectuals.
The lecture session was moderated by retired Associate Professor Dr N Birchandra.
The Manipur State  Council of CPI also commemorated the first sitting of Manipur Assembly during a function held at Irawat Bhavan today.
