IMPHAL, Oct 17: Just a day after a joint meeting was held among Meitei, Kuki and Naga legislators at Delhi on resolving the protracted Manipur crisis, Koutruk in Imphal West came under renewed attacks from armed Kukis.
Heavily armed Kukis attacked Koutruk Ching Leikai some hours after a combined team of National Investigation Agency (NIA), Imphal West district Police and Forensic Science experts carried out a field visit of Koutruk as a part of the investigation taken up by the NIA with respect to the drone bombing carried out by Kuki militants  on September 1, 2024 at the place.
The aerial bombing was followed by ground assault using sophisticated firearms. A young Meitei woman was killed while her minor daughter sustained injuries in the attack.
Taking position at Bethel Kuki village, heavily armed Kukis once again attacked Koutruk Ching Leikai using bombs and firearms at around 11.10 pm on Wednesday, sources said.
Village volunteers who were guarding the Meitei village and security personnel deployed in the area retaliated by firing toward the Kuki militants as they tried to advance toward Koutruk Ching Leikai.
The exchange of firing continued till 2 am today.
There is no report of any injuries on the side of village volunteers and security personnel.
Considering the possibility of further attacks from armed Kukis, security personnel have been keeping a strict vigil and monitoring the movement of Kuki militants in the area, said the sources.
Although the joint meeting hosted by the Intelligence Bureau (IB) under the Ministry of Home Affairs at Delhi on October 15 was expected to set on course a process of reconciliation and peace, the talk is still shrouded in mystery  with none of the Meitei legislators ready to divulge anything about what transpired at the meeting.
At the same time, the talk  which is supposed to be unconditional has run into its first major hurdle with the Kuki-Zo legislators clearly spelling out that the primary agenda of the talk should be creation of Separate Administration.
