4th Ukhrul Squash Festival kickstarts

Ukhrul, Sep 26: The 4th edition of Ukhrul Squash Festival was inaugurated by Deputy Commissioner Ukhrul, Zuringla Kengoo at 35 AR Tahao Ground, Wino Bazar today.
The two day festival is being organised by Hunphun (Ukhrul) SHG Federation.  
Addressing the gathering, Ukhrul DC encouraged the people to eat the locally available seasonal crops to stay healthy.
She elaborated on the nutritious value and health benefits of squash.
'We should include indigenous food crops in our daily diet owing to its numerous health benefits', she said.
Squash locally known as Chayote are abundantly available in Ukhrul due to the favourable climatic condition.
Stressing on the need for extensive cultivation of squash for economic development, the DC said that cohesive efforts should be made to discover better marketing avenues for boosting the rural economy.
Meanwhile DFO, Ukhrul Shangam Shaliwo lauded the women SHGs for hosting the festival.
He also spoke about value addition measures of squash
SW Suisa who attended as the guest of honour of the inaugural function suggested for the weekly market day programme on rotational basis to improve the marketing system.
The programme was attended by Colonel Manoj Shinde Commandant 35 AR; Ringyuichon Vashum Director UDWIM and Major Josephine as special guests.
At least 47 squash varieties which are grown in Ukhrul were displayed by Mathuk SHG during the festival.
Over 20 SHGs stalls are being opened in this festival.
