Fitting tributes paid to Haipou Jadonang

IMPHAL, Aug 29 : The 92nd Martyrdom Anniversary of Haipou Jadonang was observed across the State today.
Zeliangrong Union (AMN) commemorated the day at Haipou Jadonang Memorial Park at Keishampat, Imphal.
Former Union Minister Meijinlung Kamson, Chairman Hill Area Committee Daiganglung Gangmei, ZU AMN president Azang Rongmei and BJP Manipur Pradesh president A Sharda Devi among others attended the observance.
Zeliangrong United Committee, Manipur Valley observed the day at its office and later paid floral tributes at Haipou Jadonang Memorial Park at Keishampat.
Kabui Union, Manipur observed the 92nd death anniversary of Haipou Jadonang at Keishamthong Kabui Community Hall, Imphal.
Khullakpa Keishamthong Kabui Khul Amuba Kabui, Kabui Customary Council president Kamei Gangmumei Kabui,  vice president Kabui Union Mamipur Kamei Rajen Kabui attended the event.
At Kangpokpi, Zeliangrong Baudi, Manipur State Unit observed the day at Chuangphun village.
The observance was attended by chiefs, chairmen, members of village authorities, leaders of the Zeliangrong Youth Front, student unions and villagers. At the observance, the community leaders revisited the legacy of Jadonang and his supreme sacrifice.
At Noney, Rongmei Naga Council Manipur (RNCM) Longmai Luangrian, RNSOM Longmai Luanrian, VCLA and Longmai Bazaar Board observed the day at Longmai Bazar shed.
A painting competition (portrait of Haipou Jadonang) was held at Sharon English School. Tazei Public Higher Secondary School's Luckyrose Kamei won the competition.
Sharon English High School's Kahimgan Kamei, Domini English High School's Jangthai Riamei and Tent Makers Academy's Hopeson Kamei bagged the second, third and fourth prizes.
The 92nd death anniversary was also observed at Multi-Purpose Hall, Senapati by the Zeliangrong Union, Senapati Zone.
Haipou Jadonang was born in 1905 to Thiudai Malangmei (Father) and Tabonliu Malangmei (Mother) at Puilon (Kambiron) village in Tamenglong district.
He was the youngest and the first Naga person who claimed himself to be "Messiah King'' of the Nagas to liberate his people from the rule of the British. He became very popular for his prophecies, healing, religious and social activities. He visualized "Naga Raj" and started organizing his people to oppose the British.
The British colonial administration arrested Jadonang on February 19, 1931 at Lakhipur, Cachar, Assam (on the bank of Barak River) during his pilgrimage to Bhubon hills. He was kept in Silchar jail. He was brought to Manipur later and was sentenced to death by implicating him in a murder case.
He was hanged on August 29, 1931 on the bank of Nambul River near the Imphal Central Jail.
Maram Battalion of Jwalamukhi Sector in collaboration with the Zeliangrong Tribe of Naga community commemorated the death anniversary at Senapati and Ziumi village in Sankhomei COB AOR. Jadonang Malangmei (1905-1931) also known as Haipou Jadonang, emerged as a enviable figure in Naga history who embodied the spirit of courage and determination in the face of oppressive British colonial rule, said Headquarters IGAR (East).
