IMPHAL, Aug 19: By intimidating the truckers, well armed Kuki militants are forcibly collecting Rs 10,000-Rs 15,000 from every vehicle at Kangpokpi and Sapermeina area on National Highway-2, said Transporters and Drivers Council (TDC).
TDC's president H Ranjit said the truckers are not provided adequate security and the Kuki militants are collecting the heavy taxes right in front of police stations.
Speaking to reporters at TDC office at MG Avenue, Ranjit said the truckers/drivers are not happy with the security escorts being provided by the Security Advisor.
He said the nature of the security escorts provided and their conduct has compromised the safety and security of the drivers.
The security escorts lack strength and there are inadequate number of road opening parties (ROPs), he said.
The Imphal-Dimapur road has been opened to trucks carrying essential items; however, well armed Kuki militants are intimidating and threatening the drivers and forcibly collecting illegal taxes at Kangpokpi and Sapermeina areas, Ranjit said.
He said well armed Kuki militants are collecting Rs 10,000 - Rs 15,000 from every truck/vehicle right in front of the police stations.
The Government should take appropriate action. If it is unable to take action, then the road should be shut.
The Kuki militants shouldn't be allowed to operate freely and collect such taxes illegally. The Government and the Security Advisor should provide adequate and robust security escorts to the vehicles, he said.
The security escorts should include personnel of the Army, BSF and CRPF. Beside this, ROPs should be deployed in all vulnerable areas along the Highway, he said.
Ranjit informed that the TDC has written to the Chief Minister to provide specific time based adequate security along Imphal-Senapati section.
On the other hand, Ranjit said the present unrest has affected the service of buses, trucks and all other commercial vehicles. Owners of the vehicles bought on loans have been affected the most, he said. In this regard, the TDC has sought the intervention of the Chief Minister urging him to request Tata Motors, Shriram Finance and other private financial institutes to provide a one year moratorium on loans as relief, he said.
Ranjit also appealed to financial institutes to stop seizing vehicles taken on loan for default amid the unrest.
