UKHRUL, Jul 18: Ukhrul District Timber Association (UDTA) started repairing the National Highway (NH-202) from Lunghar to Jessami village under Ukhrul district.
The stretch of road which is about 90 kms has been left in a deplorable condition due to erratic flow of water.
It may be noted that NH-202 is one of the vital highways for ferrying goods and other essential commodities throughout the year into the State.
Owing to the poor condition of the road, the villagers and transporters have been facing extreme difficulties.
Villagers of Lunghar informed that one truck carrying timber slipped at Jorcheng area three days back due to the bad condition of the highway wherein the truck driver was grievously injured.
Speaking at the work site, Working President of UDTA YL Rin expressed that the repairing work has been initiated as a goodwill gesture from the contribution made by the members of UDTA and well wishers considering the plight of the transporters and villagers
It may be mentioned that NH-202 is one of the most important roads that connect State capital with Nagaland via Ukhrul district.
He went on to state that the sunken portion of the highway and all pot holes will be repaired with stone gravel using heavy machinery including excavators and tumbler trucks for immediate plying.
The repairing work will be completed in 3-4 days, he added. Lastly he urged the Departments concerned to look into the grievances of the people and take up restoration work of the highway in the interest of all.
Meanwhile, one of the truck drivers identified as Ngayaopam highlighted the ordeal of driving along this highway since it has not been maintained for a long period
He lauded the repairing works initiated by UDTA considering the hardships faced by the villagers living under Jessami and Chingai Block of Ukhrul district.
He further mentioned that NH-202 is the only highway that connects with District Headquarters for the people living in Raphei area.
