THOUBAL, Apr 16: As observed across the country, National Fire Service Day was also celebrated at Thoubal Mela ground today under the theme "Learn Fire  Safety, Increase Productivity".
It may be noted that the National Fire Service Day is observed to commemorate the 71 brave fire service personnel who sacrificed their lives during an unfortunate mishap which occurred on April 14, 1944 at Victoria Dock, Bombay known as "Bombay Explosion".
A British ship "SS Fort Stikine" which was carrying a variety of cargo, including gold, ammunition, and approximately 1400 tonnes of explosives, caught fire and led to two massive explosions taking the lives of roughly 1300 people along with the firemen.
The observance programme was organised by Thoubal Fire Service.
A mock drill was conducted in this connection, wherein fire service personnel sensitized the gathering on the precautionary measures to be taken in case of a fire and how to save people in case a fire breaks out.
Addressing the gathering, Kh Surchandra, Sub Officer, Manipur Fire Service stated that in observance of the week-long National Fire Service Day which commenced from April 14, a Manipur Fire Service team had organised mock drills at Thoubal, Bishnupur and Churachandpur in association with the Fire Service Department.
L Nabachandra, Additional Director, Manipur Fire Service Department also attended the observance programme.
