32 acres of poppy plantation destroyed

SENAPATI, Feb 4 : Security forces destroyed 32 acres of illicit poppy plantations at Chakha and Lemta villages in Senapati district today.
The poppy plantations were destroyed by personnel of Maram Battalion, Jwalamukhi Sector Assam Rifles and a team of NCB.
According to AR officials, the poppy plantations destroyed today were worth Rs 3.2 crore approximately.
The Maram Battalion took the initiative and it conducted extensive recce of the area along with the NCB before launching the drive to destroy the plantations, the officials said.
Poppy cultivation is found carried out in the hinterlands in Manipur taking advantage of the tough terrains and dense forests where motorable roads are unavailable, the AR officials said.
The Assam Rifles Maram is carrying out War on Drugs and is committed to ending illegal cultivation of poppy, they said.
Chakha and Lemta village fall under Willong sub-division in Senapati.
It may be noted that as the Government declared War on Drugs, security forces, and also the Forest Department have been carrying out poppy destruction drives for  weeks and many cultivators including several chiefs of villages have been arrested so far for their alleged involvement.
Recently, State police had carried out massive drives at Phaisi village in Chandel and many other places in different hill districts and destroyed several hectares of poppy plantations.
