MOIRANG, Dec 19: The 108th birth anniversary of Mairembam Koireng Singh, the first Chief Minister of Manipur and a renowned freedom fighter was observed today.
The observance was held at the residence of late M Koireng Singh organised by M Koireng Memorial Trust, Moirang.
The observance began with the paying of floral tributes to the bust of M Koireng Singh followed by the observance of 2-minute silence by the attendees in the honour of the conflict martyrs who have made supreme sacrifices for the cause of the Motherland.
Former Vice-Chancellor of Manipur University, H Tombi Singh; Thanga Assembly Constituency MLA, T Robindro; former Principal of Moirang College, A Sharatchandra Sharma and former Head of Department of History, MU, Professor N Joykumar graced the occasion as the presidium members.
In connection with the observance, M Koireng Memorial Trust presented blankets to the conflict survivors taking refuge at Model Floriculture Centre Moirang relief camp to help them keep warm during this winter season.
The special feature of the birth anniversary observation was the presentation of M Koireng Memorial lecture by Professor N Joykumar as the resource person.
During his lecture, N Joykumar said that M Koireng was not only a visionary Chief Minister but can be considered as the 'Architect of Modern Manipur' because of his realistic and judicious ideals for the progress of the State.
He further highlighted that M Koireng made remarkable contributions in Manipur's political history which witnessed his sincerity, transparency and relentless efforts for the welfare of the people of the State.
'Apart from his significance in politics, Koireng was also a true patriot acknowledging his sacrifices in the course of the freedom struggle of Manipur', he added.
In view of commendable feats of such an idealistic leader, Professor N Joykumar appealed to the trust to take up serious measures to sensitize the masses about the life and history of M Koireng.
