Over Rs 49 lakh vanishes from Post Office accounts

IMPHAL, Dec 10: In a surprising discovery, over Rs 49.48 lakh have been found allegedly missing from as many as 41 accounts opened with the Mantripukhri Post Office branch in Imphal West.
The 41 accounts include 24 SSA accounts, 14 Savings accounts, one Monthly Income Scheme account and 2 Fixed Deposit accounts.
When the individual account holders checked their accounts, they found their money "missing".
The total money missing from the 41 accounts amounts to Rs 49,48,619.
The individual account holders came to know of the 'missing' money when they approached the Sub-Post Master to check their account balances on Nov 25.
The individual account holders claimed they made every deposit through Postal Assistant T Kimneilam Zou.
At the time of makig every deposit, the customers were given a signed and sealed receipt. Claiming that the banking system was down, the Postal Assistant even collected some passbooks. The Postal Assistant is now missing, the victims claimed.
They claimed this fraudulent activity is suspected to have been carried out since 2020. The victims said they approached the Director, Postal Services Manipur Division with a written complaint, but their grievances have not been addressed till date.
When they approached the Mantripukhri branch, they were told to visit the head office. When they approached the head office, they were ignored, claimed the victims, appealing to the authorities concerned to look into the matter and address their grievances.
