Manipur to compete in 24 disciplines at 37th National Games

IMPHAL, Oct 7 : A strong contingent of around 560 athletes and officials are set to represent Manipur across 24 sports disciplines at the 37th National Games to be hosted by Goa from October 25 to November 9.
Manipur Olympic Association (MOA) convened a press conference this afternoon to brief on the Manipur contingent preparation ahead of National Games at the meeting of the Manipur Olympic Bhavan, Khuman Lampak Sports Complex.
Speaking to the media, secretary general of MOA Sunil Elangbam underlined the role of sports in bringing peace.
Maintaining that sports preach for peace and hold no place for discrimination on the basis of race, caste and religion, Sunil Elangbam called upon all sections of the society for collective prayer and wishes for noteworthy performances of the State athletes at the Goa Games which will feature record 43 sports disciplines.
MOA vice president, Th Joykumar said that the State is likely to field a contingent of 560 members including at least 345 athletes.
Bobby Waikhom, IAS has been appointed as the State's Chef de Mission for the games along with Deputy Chef de Missions N Phoni and T Dushanta. Further A Johnson and Kiran Thangjam have been named as Co-ordinators besides M Rajchandra as Liaison Officer, he said.
Around 2.85 crores is expected to be spent for the overall games preparation, Joykumar said while adding that the association is making best effort to cater at least one track suit, one t-shirt and a pair of shoes to each athlete and officials despite the time constraint being faced by the association.
