Awareness programme on RTI Act 2005 conducted

IMPHAL, Oct 20 : All Manipur Working Journalist Union (AMWJU) and Manipur Information Commission today jointly organised a 1-day awareness programme on RTI Act 2005 at the Conference Hall of Manipur Press Club, Imphal.
The awareness programme was conducted in connection with the Golden Jubilee Celebration of AMWJU.
Speaking on the occasion, AMWJU president Bijoy Kakchingtabam enlightened the gathering on the salient features of RTI and its implementation.
He also advised media persons of the State to take the benefits of RTI and gather information from various departments & relevant authorities to give detailed news with facts to the public.
In the academic session, Th Ibobi Singh, former Chief Information Commissioner delivered a lecture on the topic, "RTI Act in a nutshell".
He shared that the Right to Information (RTI) Act was passed by the Parliament of India on June 15, 2005 and came into force with effect from October 12, 2005.
"RTI is an act of the Parliament of India which sets out the rules and procedures regarding citizens' right to information. It was promulgated to promote transparency and accountability in the working of every public authority", he added.
State Chief Information Commissioner (I/c), Manipur Information Commission, Oinam Sunil Singh, spoke on "Role of media in effective implementation of RTI Act 2005" and added that the Act helps in containing corruption in the Government and work for the people in a better way.
Later, an interactive session was conducted and an RTI Cell of AMWJU was also inaugurated.
