1204 Dengue cases logged till Oct 9

IMPHAL, Oct 10 : The State reported 1204 cases of Dengue till 3.30 pm of October 9 this year with Imphal West registering the highest cases at 828, said State Malaria Officer Dr S Priyokumar.
Speaking to The Sangai Express, Dr Priyokumar said that three Dengue-related deaths were reported in the same period  from Imphal West, Tengnoupal and Senapati but it is not official.
He continued that not a single case of the vector borne disease was reported from  Pherzawl this year.
Saying that Dengue infection can be prevented easily even though no vaccine has been developed for the vector borne disease as of yet, Dr Priyokumar continued that the Government has also taken up several programmes to prevent Dengue outbreak.
Fogging and source detection drives have been performed at different locations across the State, he said and added that they also have carried out drives to kill mosquito eggs at multiple locations, apart from holding awareness programmes to prevent Dengue infections.
Saying that Dengue mosquito lays its eggs in water-filled containers inside the house and surrounding areas of dwellings such as  bottles, containers, tyres etc which hold water, Dr Priyokumar appealed to all people to discard unused tyres, broken utensil, or containers which can hold water.
He also said that Dengue mosquitoes only breed in clean water.
Saying that they have detected Dengue mosquitoes breeding at a flower pot at Langthabal and at the external tray on the rear side of a refrigerator at Thangmeiband, the State Malaria Officer further appealed to all to clean their surroundings regularly and wear long sleeves and long pants during daytime as these mosquitoes are active at day time. Continuing that the Dengue mosquitoes  cannot fly more than 100 metres but are  very active, Dr Priyokumar added that people if bitten by Dengue mosquitoes may develop symptoms within 7 to 15 days.
