Martyr's Day : Fitting tributes paid to Mahatma Gandhi

IMPHAL, Jan 30 : The 75th death anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi was observed as Martyrs’ Day at the Gandhi Memorial Hall, Imphal today.
The function began with singing of the National Anthem followed by a wreath laying ceremony at Mahatma Gandhi’s statue by Governor La Ganesan who attended the observance as the chief guest.
Several Ministers including Thongam Biswajit and officers of different departments also paid floral tributes and a two minute silence was observed as a mark of respect to the departed soul.
It may be mentioned that the Martyrs’ Day is observed on the death anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, who successfully led India to freedom from the British empire.
Mahatma Gandhi was assassinated on this day in 1948 by Nathuram Godse.
Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, is widely regarded as ‘Bapu’, or ‘Father of the Nation’ in India.
On this day, Indians from all around the world commemorate the legacy of the great hero.
Speaking as chief guest at the observance, Governor La Ganesan recalled the father of the Nation and said there are many things people can learn from him.
People should follow in his footsteps and promote cleanliness and work towards becoming self-reliant, said the Governor.
