IMPHAL, Aug 26: Manipur State Commission for Women (MSCW) organised a one-day awareness programme on menstrual hygiene at The New Horizon Public School, Khonghampat today.
The awareness programme is part of MSCW's initiative launched on May 28 (World Hygiene Day) to educate school girls about menstrual hygiene.
Today's awareness programme reportedly marked the close of MSCW's initiative.
Speaking on the occasion, Salam Ulka, Chairperson, Manipur State Commission for Women highlighted the hygiene measures to be undertaken during one's menstrual cycle. However, many in the State still remain ignorant about the benefits of using sanitary pads, she said. As such, young girls need to be educated thoroughly on the topic of menstrual hygiene, she said. She also touched upon the issue of increasing incidence of crime against women in Manipur.
Thumlip Tiningpham Monsang, member, Manipur State Commission for Women pointed out people still treat menstruation as a taboo subject. She stated that people should not shy away from talking about it as it is a natural process.
The programme was attended by Lourembam Dayabati, member, MSCW; Kheroda Konsam, founder secretary of New Horizon Public School and female pupils of the school.
