THOUBAL, Jun 20 : As a part of Enhancing effective legal aid & services to prisoners campaign, District Legal Services Authority, Thoubal organised an interaction programme with inmates of Manipur Central Jail, Sajiwa on Monday.
The event was attended by Binny Ngangom, chairman DLSA Thoubal; Bineshwori Maibam, secretary DLSA Thoubal; Shanta Athokpam, Chief Judicial Magistrate, Thoubal; Nemkholam Lhungdhim, Judicial Magistrate First Class Thoubal along with Remand Lawyers, Kh Jeton Meitei & Kh Lembisana Meidingu; and PLVs, Th Bishworjit Singh & W Jiban Singh.
The main objective of the interaction was to provide legal aid to the under trial prisoners who are unable to obtain legal help like filing bail applications and appealing for convicts.
During the programme, Binny Ngangom explained about the criminal proceedings right from registration of FIR, investigation, filing of Charge-Sheet and conduct of trial in the Court.
She spoke on the rights of inmates provided under Section 12 of Legal Services Authority Act, 1987.
She also mentioned that the Legal Services Authority provides assistance in contacting and informing the families of inmates about their health and other issues.
A total of 96 under-trials and convicts took part in the programme.
