IMPHAL, Jun 19: The Democratic Students’ Allian-ce of Manipur (DESAM) has urged the State Government to appoint Regular Principals and recruit teachers and staff for Government and Govern-ment-aided colleges where posts are vacant.
Addressing a press meet at Kwakeithel today, DESAM secretary general M Somorjit Luwang decried that lack of Regular Principals in 24 Government Colleges and six Government-aided colleges have marred collegiate education in the State.
He continued that the Government has not been filling the  vacant posts of Principal by giving the responsibilities of Principals to teachers/officials who have put in their charge since the last many years.
Continuing that there are many Government and Government-aided colleges which have no teachers and staff at all, Somorjit urged the State Government to rationalise the teachers and staff on the basis of subjects.
He contended that laxities of the Government towards collegiate education has been directly or indirectly affecting the students community to a great extent.
Saying that DESAM has been repeatedly pressuring the State Government to fill the vacant posts in Government and Government-aided colleges, Somorjit added that the Government, however, has not initiated any process other than giving blank assurances to fulfil the demands.
He further asked the Government to initially identify some colleges and appoint Regular Principals and fill the vacant posts of teachers and other staff where it is necessary.
Asserting that the four-year undergraduate courses under National Education Policy 2020 will commence from this session onward, the secretary general went on to point out that its implementation will be a tough challenge if the Government and Education Department don't recruit more teachers.
