The All Manipur Democratic Women's Association (AMDWA) has launched a signature campaign against the price hike of essential commodities for submission to the President.
A press release issued by AMDWA said that the association would collect over 20,000 signatures under the campaign "Chaklamba Leitaba Punshi-Sangbidhana Eigonda Piba Hak" which roughly translates as "Life free from hunger, a right given by the Constitution."
Saying that the resolution of the signature campaign would be submitted to the President by August 15, ADMDWA continued that more than 500 signatures were collected on the first day of the campaign from Khwairamband including Paona Keithel.
The statement said that the campaign was initiated as a part of the All India Democratic Women's Association (AIDWA) campaign which aims to garner over one crore signatures and highlight the woes of the people.
Maintaining that many poor people could no longer afford the price of essential commodities due to price hike, the association said that unemployment is another issue which has besieged a large number of people in Manipur and the country as a whole.
AMDWA also claimed that India is home to the largest undernourished population in the world as per the Global Hunger Report.
Claiming that skyrocketing prices of commodities largely affect the womenfolk, the association said that  the primary duty of any Government is to ensure food security and nourishment of every citizen.
AMDWA urged the Government to boost the Public Distribution System (PDS), allocate more fund for food security, increase the quality of subsidised rice and dal being provided to the beneficiaries, reduce the price of essential commodities, make kerosene available to public at Rs 14 per litre, reduce the price of  LPG refills and distribute at least 12 refills to every household in a year and  refrain from using biometric system in PDS.
The association said that the signature campaign would continue till July 31.
