Mob attacks rape accused

IMPHAL, Jun 10: Angry locals and family members of a rape victim physical ass-aulted accused Gaigongding Kamei when he was produced before the Court of Chief Judicial Magistrate, Imphal East today.     
The incident happened at around noon inside Lamphel Court complex when Gai-gongding Kamei (30) s/o Kamei Khaikpou of Nungba-4 ( Bethany), staying at present at ADC quarters Sangakpham, was produced before the Court by a team of Lamphel police station after completion of police custody period along with a prayer for judicial custody remand.
Angry locals and family members of the rape victim who were present since morning on getting information that the accused would be produced before the Court attacked the accused when he was being taken from a police vehicle to the Court room.
This resulted in a scuffle between the angry locals and police. Eventually, the police team charged the mob with batons to disperse them and bring the situation under control.
According to a complaint lodged by an elder sister of the victim at Lamphel police station, the accused called out the victim from their village gate on June 1 at around 11 am and took the victim in a Bolero jeep on the pretext of shopping.
The accused took the victim to a secluded place and allegedly raped her several times. He also threatened the victim not to disclose the crime to anyone.
Later the victim was left alone somewhere at an unknown location near Fishery Gate, Lamphel at around 10 am  of June 2.  She was handed over to Lamphel police station by some passers-by on the same day.
During the course of investigation, the accused was arrested on June 2 night from a quarters located near Lamphel Fishery gate.
Through an APP, the IO of the case submitted that the accused has admitted the charges levelled against him.
The IO then prayed the Court to remand the accused to judicial custody for further investigation of the case.
The Court, on perusal of the case record and after hearing the submission of the IO, remanded the accused to judicial custody till June 24.
