Mark returns to 15 days judicial remand

IMPHAL, May 27: Mark Thangmang Haokip who was arrested by Manipur Police from Delhi in connection with three FIR cases registered against him for allegedly writing derogatory and defamatory statements on social media, both on his Twitter and Facebook accounts, against freedom fighter Padma Bhushan awardee Rani Gaidinliu was brought to Imphal today.
Later in the evening, the Duty Magistrate remanded Mark Haokip to 15 days judicial custody after he failed to furnish a PR bond of Rs 1 lakh and surety on being granted bail. A team of Imphal police produced the accused before the Court.
International Human Right Association (IHRA), Manipur Chapter president Mark Thangmang Haokip (39) s/o Limkhosei Haokip of Molnom village, Churachandpur district was brought to Imphal by a team of Imphal police station in an Indigo flight at around 11 am today after taking transit remand from the Court concerned at Delhi.
Soon after the arrival of Mark Thangmang Haokip, a  team of Imphal West district police who were already present at the airport took him to Imphal police station.
He is likely to be produced before a Duty Magistrate, Imphal West late in the evening along with a prayer for police custody remand for further investigation of the case.
Mark Thangmang Haokip was arrested by a team of Imphal police station from Kishangarh, Delhi at around 2.30 pm  of May 24 in connection with three different FIR cases including for making defamatory statements on social media against freedom fighter Padma Bhushan awardee Rani Gaidinliu.
On Friday, the Court of Chief Judicial Magistrate, Imphal West had issued non-bailable warrant of arrest against Mark Thangmang Haokip in connection with the application filed by Imphal police station.
The application was filed by the Officer in-Charge of Imphal police station on the ground that he (Mark Thangmang Haokip) wrote derogatory and defamatory statements on social media both on his Twitter and Facebook accounts against freedom fighter Padma Bhushan awardee Rani Gaidinliu on November 23, 2021.
The application mentioned that leaders of ten civil society organisations of Manipur lodged a complaint before the OC of Imphal police station stating that such derogatory and defamatory statements by Mark Thangmang Haokip had hurt the sentiments of many people and might disturb communal harmony.
