Bail plea rejected
IMPHAL, May 10 : The Chief Judicial Magistrate Imphal West has rejected the bail application filed by the suspended Sub Inspector of Imphal Police Station who is an accused in the 'custodial death' of goldsmith Arambam Nanao on May 2.
Accused Sub Inspector Thokchom Jitendro Singh, s/o (L) Th Gopal Singh of Heinoukhongnembi Thok-chom Leikai was produced before the Court through video conferencing today.
During the hearing, the IO of the case prayed for another seven days of police remand till May 16 as the investigation is still incomplete.
The defence counsel, on the other hand, prayed for bail.
It is reported that the accused has admitted to have arrested the goldsmith in civil dress on the request of Sub Inspector K Tejkumar Singh of Imphal East commando and based on the complaint lodged by one Kangabam Jackey Singh, proprietor of Mouru & Sons Jewellery at Kangabam Leikai.
During interrogation, Thokchom Jitendro reportedly revealed that Nanao ( the deceased goldsmith) took 15 tolas of gold from Kangabam Jackey Singh and he beat Nanao a few times as the deceased didn't disclose the whereabouts of the gold.
As per the police officer in suspension, Nanao had put some gold on mortgage at Uripok Chakrikom while some had been given to his mother-in-law and others sold.
Reportedly, Sub Inspector K Tejkumar Singh is out of station for medical treatment.
The IO further stated that the vehicle (white Activa) and the car (Swift) used in committing the offence are yet to be seized. The defence counsel objected to remanding the accused to judicial custody and prayed to shorten the police custody period. The Court, after hearing both the parties, remanded the accused to police custody for seven more days till May 16 and directed the IO to take the accused either to JNIMS or RIMS for medical check-up every 48 hours or whenever needed.
