RIMS, IMA celebrate World Health Day

IMPHAL, Apr 7 : The Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) and Indian Medical Association, Manipur State Branch celebrated World Health Day at its respective halls at Lamphelpat today.
Speaking as the chief guest of the function at RIMS, RIMS Director Professor A Santa Singh stated that the theme of the programme "Our Planet, Our Health" is very relevant as the world has been facing different challenges in the form of pandemic, new disease and pollution among others.
He also stated that the institute has been taking up a massive tree plantation programme since the last few years in its campus to combat climate change and global warming.
Organising many competitions for students on the occasion is a right step as it will help impart the importance of world health to young minds, Prof Santa added.
Professor  Brojen Singh Akoijam, Dean (Academic) of RIMS who was the functional president of the programme, appealed to all to take equal roles in keeping the RIMS campus neat and clean.
Later, the Director and Dean (Academic) distributed cash awards and certificates to the prize winners of essay and painting competitions held on the occasion. Khundrakpam Doyen of Regular School, Presila Heikrujam of Kendriya Vidyalaya, Imphal and Niharika Ngangbam of Imphal Valley School stood 1st, 2nd and 3rd respectively in the essay competition which was held on the topic Fighting COVID-19.
In the painting competition, Purnima Soibam of  Kendriya Vidyalaya, Imphal and Juliana Haobijam, Little Flower School School got 1st and 3rd prize respectively while Regina Yengkhom of Imphal Valley School and Angela Heikrujam of Kendriya Vidyalaya, Imphal bagged the 2nd position.
Officials, staff and personnel of CRED and Manipur Security Guards also took part in the celebration.
Earlier, the Director and officials of the institute planted trees in the campus.
The Indian Medical Association, Manipur State Branch also observed the day at Lamphelpat, today.
IMA former president Dr Mohen Yanglem, senior member Dr Nongmeikakpam Jiten and Dr RK Lenin were the chairpersons of the celebration.
At the observance, IMA Manipur State Branch president Dr Jugindro Sorokhaibam said that they observe the day to spread awareness on global warming and climate change which are serious threats to the world and survival of many species. Saying that several species including humans might face extinction if 'we don't focus' on the health of planet Earth in future, Dr Jugindro stated all forms of life will cease to exist if the temperature of Earth's surface continues to rise rapidly.
He then appealed to all to help fight the climate crisis and save planet Earth.
Meanwhile, the cycling wing of IMA, Doctors on Pedal took out a  cycle rally in the surrounding areas of Imphal to spread awareness about healthy living. Members of Manipur Adventure and Mountain Biking Association (MAMBA) and several medical students also took part in the cyclothone.
