IMPHAL, Apr 9 : Manipur Organic Mission Agency (MOMA) Project Director K Devadutta has stated that the State Government is eyeing to develop Kwatha in Tengnoupal district as an organic village.
Regarding this, a team of Horticulture and Soil Conservation Department went to Kwatha yesterday and interacted with the local populace to inform them about the advantages of organic farming and the dif- ferent projects being taken up by MOMA.
During the meeting, the two sides discussed cultivation of suitable crops at Kwatha, marketing and construction of a rural market in the village.
Speaking to media persons, K Devadutta stated that the Govnt is considering development of Kwatha Village as an organic village on the advice of Chief Minister N Biren Singh in order to improve socio-economic conditions of the people there.
Saying that they visited the place to identify crops/plants suitable for plantation there and which have high demand in the market, the Project Director continued that the department would start planting certain crops in five hectares of land from this season onward on experimental basis.
He further stated that betel plant, cashew, wild orange and lychee trees seem to be growing well in Kwatha village and these produces have high marketing potential.
The department would initiate the project on a community farming basis first and after that all the farmers of the village would be registered as organic farmers under Mission Organic Value Chain Development for North East Region (MOVCD-NER)
Continuing that the 4th phase of MOVCD-NER will be rolled out before the end of 2022-23 financial year, he added that Kwatha would also be covered under the scheme soon.
