CHD/THB, Mar 17: A 3-days long Skill Development Programme on "Enhancing fish productivity through farmers participatory research" began today at Komlathabi/Kaziphung, Chandel District.
The programme was organised by District Fishery Office, Chandel in association with ICAR Central Institute of Fisheries Education, Kolkata Centre under the Tribal Sub-Plan (TSP) scheme.
It was attended by Fisheries Department Director, H Balkrishna Singh, MCS; Institute of Fisheries Education Kolkata principal, Scientist Dr Sukham Munilkumar and DFO Chandel, Jenishing Tarao as presidium members.
Speaking on the occasion, H Balkrishna stated that out of the total requirement of 56,000 metric ton of fish in a year, 36000 metric ton is produced in Manipur and the remaining 20,000  metric ton is imported from other states.
Stating that about Rs 400 crore worth of fish is imported annually to the state, H Balkrishna stressed on the need to increase the production of fish by using various new techniques.
Later, Dr S Munilkumar delivered a lecture on "Farming systems relevant to Manipur" and Scientist Hanjabam Mandakini Devi spoke on "Importance of fish as Health Food".
Meanwhile, the 3-days long Skill Development Programme organised by District Fishery Officer, Thoubal in association with Institute of Fisheries Education, ICAR-Kolkata on "Modern method for sustainable Aquaculture" concluded on Wednesday at the Conference hall of District Fishery Office, Thoubal District.
During the programme, fish feed and testing kits were also provided to 50 fish farmers.
