IMPHAL, Feb 15 : Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI) has resolved to meet different political leaders and press the demand to grant political autonomy along with a special status to Manipur ahead of the Assembly election.
Speaking to media persons at UCM office today, COCOMI coordinator Longjam Ratankumar stated that they opted to meet leaders of different political parties so that their demand for a special political status could be actualised.
Saying that the resolution for demanding special status was taken during a public convention held on December 6, 2020 at GM Hall, Ratankumar added that a memorandum in this regard had been submitted to the Prime Minister on January 19.
Ratankumar further stated that COCOMI will seek support from different political parties in demanding the special status and to incorporate the same in their respective agenda.
For BJP, COCOMI will discuss the topic with State unit president A Sharda Devi, he said and added that the committee will also take appointment with Indian National Congress and other parties too soon.
Ratankumar maintained that Manipur rightly deserves political autonomy as the State had a unique political history and held elections under Manipur State Constitution Act 1947 in 1948 even before India.
Saying that many issues besieging the State can be resolved easily if Manipur enjoys political autonomy and also improve the political relation with India , he opined that a collective effort from all political parties is required to meet the demand.
Further stating that the demand was raised in the larger interest of the people of Manipur, Ratankumar said that COCOMI is currently holding a series of meeting with several community leaders too.
"All the right thinking citizens of Manipur must cooperate with the movement as special status to Manipur would be beneficial to all," he added.
